General Military Academy

  • The 21st of February 1974, during the Oath of Allegiance of the XXXIII Class, the "Anthem of the General Military Academy" was premiered in Zaragoza. Prior to its release as the official anthem of the Academy it was regarded as a marching song. The process of composition and lyrics of the anthem took place in 1964 while the Director of the Academy was General Carlos Iniesta Cano.

The direct intervention of General Iniesta was decisive in the origin of the anthem. It was also emotionally charged and had its little anecdotal component. When General Iniesta Cano took up the Centre's command, he was reported that the Academy didn’t have any anthem. Then he asked: “What do the cadets sing at official events?” and he was answered: “The Infantry Anthem or the Song of the Legionnaire". Then, General Iniesta responded with these words contained in an autobiography published in 1984: "The Academy needs its own anthem, an anthem that reflects the joint training of all Cadets, to strengthen their union in a common spirit.” He added: “I am, as an Infantry officer, enthusiastic of our anthem; and as a former legionnaire, it is logical that I feel the same about this Corps. But we have to think that every branch and everybody in our army has also their anthem {...} There should be an anthem common to all."
Then, he told the Captain Conductor of the Music Unit to report to him and said: "Dear Raventós: within four days I want you to compose the music of the anthem of the Academia General Militar.”
