Squaring the circle
Have you ever wondered why a certain unit is deployed at a specific time and to a specific location? Far from being a random or casual decision, the reason behind this designation is the result of a complex fitting together of pieces, which has to allow a response to all the commitments that the units of the Army have at both the internal and international level. Bearing in mind that these commitments include foreign operations - as part of NATO, the United Nations and the European Union -, participating in multinational structures, supporting civilian authorities and the permanent national contingency plans which require them to keep forces available for surveillance and presence tasks.

Mali, the most human side
Throughout November, the ‘King Alfonso the 13th Brigade, II in the Legion, took over in Mali. As the majority of the 15th Spanish contingent, they gave continuity to the European Union’s Training Mission, and to those projects which were being developed. Although the Spaniards’ main job is to provide a protection force and train the Malian soldiers, they cannot leave out the most human side of the mission, which is carried out by the Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) team

As the driving force behind the experiments for the Force 35 programme, the ‘Alfonso XIII’ Brigade, 2nd of the Legion, has been the pioneering unit in the evaluation of the Alakran, a mortar mounted in a light vehicle, developed by NTGS (New Technologies Global Systems) from the Everis group. The system has an 81/120 millimetre mortar fire capacity, although the tests focused on using 120mm.

Intense heat challenges shooters’ aim
It wasn’t 40 years or the Sinai desert, but the participants in the 5th edition of Desert Sniper have also faced a tough test. Above all, they were challenged by the heat, but this was the idea behind taking them to the ‘Chinchilla’ Centre for Training (CENAD, to use it’s Spanish acronym) in Albacete, in the middle of July, the hottest and driest month of the year in this part of Spain.

As we were saying yesterday… 525 years later
The post of sergeant is almost as old as the army itself. It was at the end of the 15th century, as a result of the creation of the first modern army, when the sergeants started to take the first steps up a ladder which took centuries to solidify into the non-commissioned officer (NCO) structure.

"VALIANT LYNX". The most of the year
The "Valiant Lynx" exercise was the Spanish Army's main commitment to NATO in 2018 and its largest exercise of the year. Its purpose has been to verify that the Spanish Army is prepared to face a high intensity military operation, applying NATO procedures in the planning, direction and execution of the same. This is very important, as standardised systems and procedures allow all members countries to quickly integrate into Alliance's command structures to take part in multinational operations. To achieve this desired readiness and interoperability, command and control structures must be prepared from the highest to the lowest level as a vertical assessment.

8x8, the wait is over
The Spanish Army's aspiration of having a modern vehicle, which replaces the veteran Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier (BMR in Spanish) and which also becomes the key vehicle of the modern Brigades, comes from long time ago. However, the desfavorable economic situation left the project cancelled. The recovery after the crisis has allowed an attempt of restarting the project, and it already has fixed dates, a budget of 92 million of Euros and a recipient: "La Unión Temporal de Empresas" formed by Indra, General Dynamics European Land Systems-Santa Bárbara Sistemas and SAPA operations. At the end of 2015 it was signed the contract for the start of the first step (the design and development phase), which will finish next November with the arrival of five technological demonstrators.

It goes further
Hand-to-Hand Combat and Non-Lethal Intervention (CCC-INL in Spanish) is the youngest sport of military interest. In 2014 it took place its fire baptism with the celebration of the 1st Military Trophy of the Spanish Army and, in 2015, it took place the 1st CCC-INL Championship of the Spanish Army. Since then, there has been a great development, as from the three original modalities, ten have been currently reached, thanks to the impulse of the Army Central Committee of Physical Education (JCED in Spanish).
