KSPAGT IV

The Battalion Task Force, under the command of Colonel Fernando Sánchez-Lafuente, which was deployed in the zone between September 2000 and April 2001, was formed from the 1st Mountain Light Infantry Brigade "Aragón".

As on previous occasions, the Battalion was deployed in the Northeast of Kosovo in four detachments: Istok, Rakos, Durakovac and Zlokucane. The force also included a Light Armoured Squadron from the 2nd Cavalry Brigade "Castillejos" based in Zaragoza.

The military personnel who form part of the Multinational Brigade West are completed with a Sapper Unit located in Dekane, a Special Operations Unit from the Legionnaire Special Operations Battalion and a Civic-Military Co-operation team from the Baleares Military Command.

These last two units had their base in the city of Pec, where the Multinational Brigade West headquarters was installed. Occasionally, a company from the Spanish Group moves to Mitrovica to reinforce the Multinational Brigade North.

The Battalion Task Force was composed of a total of 863 troops that stayed on the mission for six months, unlike earlier forces that had been relieved every four months. In this time "Aragón" Group performed over 9,000 patrols, and at the 3,500 checkpoints established, they seized numerous weapons and ammunition.

Likewise, they carried out 700 convoys and escorts, their vehicles travelling nearly 700,000 kilometres.

Their Civic-Military Co-operation teams distributed 12 tons of humanitarian aid among the different communities that inhabit the area of Spanish responsibility.
