The group of swimmers from the General Military Academy swam across the Straight in five and a half hours
The group of swimmers from the General Military Academy (GMA), comprised of a Captain teacher, seven male cadets and one female cadet, accomplished, on the 8th of July, the proposed challenge: swim across the Straight of Gibraltar - and not only for reaching the two nearest points - to raise funds for a Solidary Project in Mali. An effort that took five and a half hours and finished with a well-deserved reward.
The journey took place in some adverse meteorological conditions, with strong westerly winds. After five and a half hours of swimming in these conditions, the participants reached La Ribera beach, 32 kilometres from Tarifa, where they received a warm welcome from many people from Ceuta.
This challenge consisted of two objectives: one part, collect donations for the Solidary Project in Mali, named "Building a Future, Mali", and the other part, show to the public the total commitment of the young and future officials of the Army and Civil Guard.
Thanks to the funds collected through "Building a Future, Mali", a Multifunctional Educational Center will be built in the Malian region of Kati. There, where there is a situation of extreme poverty, African Missionaries (Padres Blancos) are dedicated to the fight against illiteracy and access to the basic necessities of life.
