     The “San Marcial” Division

The “San Marcial” Division of the Army comes from a long tradition of armored and mechanized units and was created in 1992 when Spain’s first tank unit (the Compañía de Carros de Asalto) was established under command of the Central School of Marksmanship (Escuela Central de Tiro).
Other armored and mechanized units came afterward, all of them precursors to the 1st Armored Division “Brunete”, constituted on August 20th, 1943, which was based on the 13th Motorized Division and included, among other units, a Division Headquarters in Madrid.
In February 1996, the Division adopted a new organizational structure and changed its name to 1st Mechanized Division “Brunete”, following the reorganization of the Army instituted by the “Plan Norte”. Its Headquarters was transferred in 1998 from its former location at El Pardo (Madrid), to Burgos, where was stationed at the Diego Porcelos Barracks.
On April 11th, 2006, a Royal Decree established the organization and deployment of the Army Force, mandating the constitution of the Heavy Forces.
Instruction 120/06 of October 2nd ordered the change of name of the 1st Mechanized Division “Brunete”, which became the Heavy Forces Command.
On January 1st, 2017, the “San Marcial” Division was created on the basis of the former Army Heavy Forces.
Ministry of Defense Order No. 1362/2018, of December 20th, regulating the organizational structure of the Army, establishes that the “San Marcial” Division, from January 1st, 2020, shall be organized as follows: Headquarters, Headquarters Battalion, 10th Brigade “Guzmán el Bueno”, 11th Brigade “Extremadura” and 12th Brigade “Guadarrama”.
Ministry of Defense Order No. 708/2020, of July 27th, regulating the organizational structure of the Army, establishes that the new “San Marcial” Division shall be organized as follows: Headquarters, “San Marcial” Division Headquarters Battalion, 6th Paratroopers Brigade “Almogávares”, Mountain Troops Command, Special Operations Command “Órdenes Militares”, Army Aviation and 1st Information Operations Regiment.
