The image of the “Gabriel de Castilla” BAE (Spanish Antarctic Base) has been immortalized on a Post Office stamp. On Jan. 30th there was a presentation of the stamp at the Buena Vista Palace in the Spanish Army HQ, Madrid.

The Chief of Staff of the Spanish Army, General Domínguez Buj, chaired the presentation that was organized by the Deputy Director for Philately of the Spanish National Post Service (Correos) , Modesto Fraguas. After his words, there was a videoconference with the Spanish Antarctic Base that the Spanish Army manages on Deception Island since 1989 supporting Spanish scientific research in the Austral continent. Major Vélez, chief of the 30th contingent and who is currently deployed over there, shared also some words with the audience.

Afterwards, the event ended with the traditional ‘franking of honor’ carried out by the Chief of Staff of the Spanish Army and the National Post Service representative. Each of the attendees got an illustrated envelope with the original stamp postmarked at the presiding speaker´s table.
