The 14th Gathering of Veteran Parachutists brought nearly 2,000 people – including veterans and their families – to the “Príncipe” base of the 6th Parachute Brigade “Almogávares” at Paracuellos de Jarama (Madrid) on 19 and 20 June.

These gatherings combine military activities with family fun and entertainment so that all have a good time as they celebrate those who contributed with their hard work to the history of the Brigade.

Participants enjoyed exhibitions of the Unit’s materiel, a visit to the Historic Hall, performances by the Guard Dogs Training School, paratrooper drops, paramotor flights, archery by Almogavar crossbowmen and a collection of Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In addition, the young ones were delighted by a bouncy castle, a mechanical bull, paintball, mine detection, an obstacle course… A perfect setting for two days marked by comradeship, nostalgia and pride.

The veteran parachutists – “once a parachutist, always a parachutist”, as they put it – could also observe a military parade. The next day, they visited the “Primo de Rivera” cantonment, former headquarters of the Brigade. They then attended a ceremony to pay homage to those who have sacrificed their lives for Spain at the military plot of the local cemetery in Alcalá de Henares, where they were accompanied by their families.

In short, it was an emotional gathering through which the Brigade showed its appreciation to those who keep alive in their hearts an immense love for the fatherland… and for the silk of the parachute.
