The National University Militia Union Celebrates the 20th National University Militia Day

On 9th November, in Hoyo de Manzanares, the commandant of the Engineer Academy, General Antonio González, presided over the commemorative events for the 20th National University Militia Day, in which 68 members of the National University Militia Union renewed their commitment of service to Spain, along with relatives who wished to accompany them in their kiss of the pleats of the Academy Colour.  
 

On this anniversary, General González presented to them the history of the centre, based in Hoyo de Manzanares. Following this, they visited the Academy’s most relevant sites, such as the specific museum exhibition hall, the noble hall, the library and the chapel. 

The acting president of the National University Militia Union, Mr. Alfonso Vázquez, gave an address after expressing gratitude to the academy for making it easy to hold the ceremony.  ‘With renewed eagerness we reiterate our Oath of Allegiance to the Flag on these significant premises, with the promise to remember with utmost gratitude from all members of the University Militia and very especially today from those of us who had the honour of carrying out our military service in units of the glorious Engineer Arm’, he stated. 

In turn, the commandant of the Academy responded to this address by reminding that the University Militias ‘represented the fraternal union of arms, letters and science, as well as the enormous importance of the significance of this fraternal union being reaffirmed here along with the manner of committed service that those militias represented’.  Likewise he expressed gratitude to them for their ‘invaluable example for our students of military education and training, who see in you a testimony of life committed to the Country, as the one they have also decided to assume’. 

Once the military parade had concluded and as is traditional at this celebration, the members of the National University Militia Union sang Margarita is the Name of my Love.
