The 1st/72nd Anti-aircraft Artillery Group carried out an anti-aircraft defence exercise from 13th to 17th February, at “San Gregorio” Training Centre in Zaragoza. This exercise, in which 140 officers, non-commissioned officers and artillerymen have participated allows for improving the unit’s command and control, fire and logistics core training.
For its execution, the 1st/72nd Anti-aircraft Group has had collaboration from the Air Force, which has contributed several E-25 aircraft (to simulate vital point attacks) as well as TM-12 aircraft (to simulate electronic warfare attacks aimed at disabling anti-aircraft detection systems). In this manner, it has been possible to confirm the preparation and decision-making capabilities officers and non-commissioned officers from the Semiautomatic Medium Range Anti-aircraft Artillery Operations Centre and cannon platoons, in a situation similar to a real time anti-aircraft confrontation.
Additional instruction
It’s been some time since specific anti-aircraft instruction ceased to be the only training received by 1st/72nd Anti-aircraft Artillery Group artillerymen. Thus, taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the National Training Centre, various activities have been undertaken to improve the preparation of the Group’s personnel in small unit tasks during projection operations.
To this end, the combat installations have been used in the town of Casas Altas, where a hostage liberation operation and the capture of an insurgent leader have been carried out, with collaboration from the National Training Centre Opposition Force. Incidences have also been coordinated in convoy movement along a route with high risk of attack by improvised explosive devices, to simulate the Lithium route in Afghanistan.
