‘Fuerte de la Purísima’ fort, formerly known as Sidi Guariach, since 24th November, has a commemorative plaque in memory of the centenary of the creation of the Melilla Indigenous ‘Regulares’ Forces. It was precisely at this site where the first indigenous soldiers enlisted, the reason the Fort is considered to be the birthplace of the unit.
The commander of the 52nd Melilla ‘Regulares’ Group, Colonel Martín Cabrero, presided over the military ceremony that was carried out on the parade ground of this historical building. During the ceremony also present were a representation from the 52nd Ceuta ‘Regulares’ Group and another from the Association of ‘Regulares’ Veterans. The regional ministress on Social Welfare in Melilla, Ms. Mª Antonia Garbín, was in charge of unveiling the plaque donated by the autonomous city.
The ‘regulares’ remained in the Fuerte de la Purísima fort from 1911until 2001, when the building began to be used for civilian purposes. Nonetheless, it continues to be a very special place and full of memories for all those who visit it, or have worn at some time in their life the garbanzo coloured uniform in which so many Spanish Army victories have been achieved.
