At a ceremony held on 14th July Plaza de Tetuán square in Valencia, next to the Headquarters building, Lieutenant General Rafael Comas Abad has taken up the post as commander of the High Readiness Land Headquarters. 
Attending the ceremony have been numerous civilian guests, among whom were the president of the Autonomous Government of Valencia, Mr. Juan Gabriel Cotino; the Government delegate, Ms. Ana Botella Gómez; and the mayoress of Valencia, Ms. Rita Barberá.
Lieutenant General Comas emphasized the qualities of the High Readiness Land Headquarters, which has a NATO Rapid Deployment Headquarters with “proven capabilities and that shortly will deploy in Afghanistan”, as well as a national Headquarters “certified with both army corps and division land capabilities, as well as the joint capabilities of the Joint Quick Reaction Force”. 
The lieutenant general reached this employment by agreement of the cabinet on 8th July last.  A graduate in law, he has a fine command of the English, French and Italian languages.  The lieutenant general, who belongs to the Engineer Arm, entered the General Military Academy in 1971 and was part of its 30th class.  He has been closely linked to Valencia as he has held posts such as those of general commander of the Manoeuvre Force Signals Brigade, based in Bétera, and colonel commander of the 21st Signals Regiment in Manises. His previous post has been at the Training and Doctrine Command in Granada.
