The Mountain Military Club carried out an attractive short trip, from 20th to 22nd May, to the Palencia mountains in order to know some natural spots of special interest, as well as the Romanesque artistic heritage that this province holds in store.

From the viewpoint of nature, the initiative included a route on foot from Mave to Villaescusa de las Torres, through the Horadada Canyon, where Club members visited the Karstic landscape of Las Tuerces; and a trekking route -10 kilometres on trails and paths in three and a half hours-to Tejeda de Tosande through a beautiful valley, in which they crossed a thick beech wood that is considered to be a relic of the Tertiary Era.

Regarding culture, the 42 participants could enjoy a guided visit to one of the best ensambles of cave hermitism on the Peninsula, in Olleros de Pisuerga; a walk through the monumental town of Aguilar de Campoo; a guided visit of the Monastery of Santa María la Real, museum and Romanesque study centre; and, on the return Madrid, the façade of the church of San Pedro de Moarves.

A club with history

The origins of this club date back to 1973, when it took its first steps.  In 1976 it was authorised by the Ministry of the Army and, in 1977, it was published in the Official Diary.  Since then it has been dedicated to promoting mountain sports and, at present, it organises numerous sports and cultural activities throughout the year.  Shortly this club will have a link on the Ministry of Defence intranet where it will announce its proposals and initiatives.

For further information on activities and membership, the club can be contacted by telephone on 91 549 83 49 or by e-mail (clubmm@teleline.es).
