The “Friends of the Tercio Brigades’ Spanish Road” Association has started up with the intention of conserving the memory of the itineraries followed by Spanish troops during the 16th and 17th centuries in order to reach the Netherlands, where the Eighty Year’s War (1568-1648) was taking place. The alliances of the countries through which the Tercio Brigades had to travel obliged them to vary the route, so that the soldiers could reach their destination. All these itineraries made up the so called Spanish Road.
This Association was presented on 17th May at the Army Museum auditorium, with the wish to promote the study and dissemination of any aspect related with this great logistic feat, by means of trips, lectures, publications and collaboration with institutions and organisations.
At the beginning of the ceremony, the Museum director, General Antonio Izquierdo, addressed those attending, among whom were the vice-mayor of Toledo, Mr. Ángel Felpeto. The director reminded that one of the Museum’s objectives consists of showing Spanish Army history as an integral and inseparable part of the history of Spain. Subsequently, the president of the Association, General César Muro, explained the aims that had been set and described the project undertaken as “marvellous madness”. Furthermore, the journalist and writer Mr. Fernando Martínez Laínez offered the lecture titled The Spanish Road. The ceremony concluded with the explanation of the scheduled activities and the presentation of the website: www.elcaminoespanol.com.
