THE HIGH MOUNTAIN MILITARY GROUP CELEBRATES THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS CREATION.

The commemorative events open to the public will take place on Base San Bernardo in Jaca on 20th and 21st November.

Aproximación EverestOn 20th and 21st November next the High Mountain Military Group, with headquarters at the Mountain and Special Operations Military School, commemorates its 25th anniversary with the celebration of events open to the public on Base San Bernardo in Jaca, whose programme is outlined below.

In its 25-year existence, the High Mountain Military Group has carried the Spanish Flag to the most inhospitable corners of the Planet:  various over eight thousand metre mountains, such as Mount Nanga Parbat (1987), Mount Shisha Pangma (1990), Mount Everest (1992), Mount Gasherbrum I (1996), Mount Cho-Oyu (2001) and Mount Gasherbrum II (2006) . The “Three Poles of the Earth” project (Geographical North Pole, South Pole and Mount Everest), have been completed by a High Mountain Military Group member, and more recently, another High Mountain Military Group member completed “The Seven Summits” project: Mt. Aconcagua, Mt. Everest, Mt. Mckinley, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Elbrus, Mt. Vinson and the  Carstensz Pyramid.

Collaboration with Civilian Institutions

Parallel to sports activities, the High Mountain Military Group has collaborated with numerous civilian institutions, such as the University of Zaragoza, the University of Vigo, the “Clínico Universitario” Hospital, the Aragon Government Sports Medicine Centre, etc. These are collaborations that have meant having irreplaceable field study for research projects and studies of all types in which the High Mountain Military Group has participated.

La marcha AntártidaLastly, collaborations with organisations and associations that facilitate the integration of handicapped persons in society, through the undertaking of mountain activities, have been another of the strong points of the High Mountain Military Group’s activities.  The Spanish National Organisation for the Blind, the Spanish Mountain and Climbing Society for the Blind, the “Mountains without Frontiers” association or the “Natural Environment and Handicaps” association are only some of the organisations with which the High Mountain Military Group has poured out its enthusiasm and solidarity throughout these years. 

PROGRAMME OF COMMEMORATIVE ANNIVERSARY EVENTS IN JACA

Saturday, 20th November 6:00 pm Exposition of High Mountain Military Group materials and technical equipment.
 Visit of the Mountain and Special Operations Military School museum. 
8:00 pm  A never-before-shown audiovisual projection on  the expedition by the handicapped sports association “Mountains without Frontiers” to Mount Cho-Oyu, (8,201 metres), which took place last spring with 2 High Mountain Military Group guides participating, along with members of the Spanish Television programme “On the Edge of the Impossible”.
Sunday, 21st November
10:00  am Ascent of one of the most emblematic mountains in the vicinity of Jaca: Oroel Peak. This mountaineering activity is open to all indiviuals, as well as mountain associations and clubs, that wish to accompany the High Mountain Military Group members.  The meeting point is the Oroel Parador hotel parking area.
