THE SPANISH PROVINCIAL RECONSTRUCTION TEAM PROMOTES SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT IN AFGHANISTAN.

The Spanish Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) in the Afghan province of Badghis has started a new initiative to promote security and rural development, on this occasion in the Qades district, where the PRT is undertaking various projects.

The Team commander, Colonel Trascasa, on 9th August attended a “shura” (meeting) held in the locality of Rabat, in which he was accompanied by the governor and vice-governor of Badghis. Also participating in the encounter were the provincial heads of security and police, the head public prosecutor of the province and dignitaries from the Qades district localities, as well as representatives from the international cooperation agencies from Spain, the United States and the North American State Department.

Among the matters dealt with, security was outstanding, especially important with a view to the 18th September provincial elections.  Also, the main needs of the district’s population were set out, the status of ongoing projects explained and forthcoming projects to be undertaken announced. 

Two days earlier another “shura” had been held, with the aim of reorienting the investment effort in rural development in the Muqur and Bala Murghab districts. Participating in the encounter were the commander of Regional Command West, General Berto, the commander of the Spanish PRT, the provincial governor and co-operation agency representatives. Improvement projects were put forward for living conditions, livestock farming, irrigation methods, photovoltaic energy and road construction. 

Thanks to these “shuras”, development projects are going to be promoted in Qades, Muqur and Bala Murghab, three of the most important districts in Badghis province.
