Among other authorities attending the ceremony will be the Joint Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Force General José Julio Rodríguez Fernández and the Chief of the Army Staff, Army General Fulgencio Coll Bucher. These awards have the aim of promoting artistic and literary creation regarding the multiple facets of the Army within the framework of Armed Forces action, as well as awareness and dissemination of military life. For this ceremony, taking advantage of the 90th anniversary of the Army General School of Physical Education, the topic “The Army and Sport” has been chosen with the goal of paying tribute to a Centre that was a pioneer in Physical Education in Spain, and that, since its creation in 1929, has contributed to sports training through military physical instruction.
The “Army Awards” originated in 1945. In their present format, since 1963, this award has been announced every year in the Official State Bulletin and the Official Defence Bulletin, thus becoming one of the oldest awards on the Spanish cultural scene in the last fifty years.
This year the Army has awarded the 2010 Army Awards Special Distinction to the Spanish gymnast, four time champion of Spain and bronze medallist in the 1978 European championship of rhythmic gymnastics, Ms. Susana Mendizabal Albizu.
