Bétera welcomes new emerging NATO concepts

Wednesday, March 3, 2021

Number: 8340

The “Jaime I” base in Bétera (Valencia), headquarters of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Spain (HQ NRDC-ESP),  has hosted the II Seminar on Emerging Concepts of NATO, which was held on February 23, 24 and 25.

During these days, the strategic environment and the threats identified by NATO have been analyzed, while at the same time the concepts in development with which to face them and that are applicable to the experimentation phase of Force 35 have been presented, of the level Land Component Command – Army Corps of the Spanish Army.

The seminar, organized by the HQ NRDC-ESP, collects the main doctrinal developments that are discussed in the different forums of the Alliance and seeks to share and inform the first-level commands of the Army, Navy, Air Force, personnel from the General Directorate of Defense Policy, the Centre for Advanced Defense Studies, Defense Staff and Operations Command.

The most innovative concepts that have been analyzed during its development have been, among others, hybrid warfare, multi-domain operations, defense and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic zone, the valuation of the information environment or the cyber concept and electromagnetic activities.

Preparation for the Warfighting Corps
Among the main themes is the new concept of the Army Corps in High Intensity Operations (Warfighting Corps). This is of paramount importance for HQ NRDC-ESP as it is currently immersed in its preparation phase as NATO Warfighting Corps, in practice since exercise TORO 20, which was carried out in October, and in which it participated as Army Corps Headquarters in conventional operations.

On January the 1st, 2022, HQ NRDC-ESP will assume the role of the Warfighting Corps of NATO for one year, which means that it must be in a position to exercise command and control of up to five divisions in a conventional high intensity operation. They must be previously certified through a Combat Readiness Assessment, within the framework of exercise Steadfast Leda 21.

NATO is constantly developing thanks to the experiences and lessons contributed by the member armies to be able to anticipate the changes that are taking place in the world and that can endanger the security of the allies. As an integrated element in the NATO Force Structure, the HQ NRDC-ESP receives first-hand and shares doctrinal developments to adapt to new security challenges in a dynamic and changing environment, with which it is permanently updated on new conceptual developments in the environment of the Atlantic Alliance.
