ENHANCED FORWARD PRESENCE VI

In the last Warsaw Summit, the Heads of State and Governments from the Atlantic Alliance agreed to carry out the Wales agreements, putting into action a concerted response which is appropriately adapted to the challenges coming from both the east and the south.

As part of this response and with the objective of increasing deterrence in the eastern flank of the Alliance, NATO has designed an Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP), which is respectful of the NATO-Russia Founding Act and which is part of the security measures in Allied territory approved at the Welsh Summit and defined at the Warsaw Summit.

The Enhanced Forward Presence is defensive in nature, multinational, based on voluntary contributions, interoperable and able to deploy in the Baltic countries and Poland.

The body of the eFP has been established as four (4) Battle Groups (BG), led by the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada. Spain’s participation will be as part of the BG which is led by Canada and will deploy in Latvia.

On the 20th of January, the sixth relief of the Spanish contingent in the eFP mission was carried out. The 6th eFP contingent, whose chief is Lieutenant-colonel Orzáez and is mostly made up of personnel from the 10th ‘Guzmán el Bueno’ Brigade, took over from the previous contingent, which was in large part from the 11th ‘Extremadura’ Brigade and had been in Latvia since July of last year.
