SUPPORT TO IRAK VI

On 19 May 2017, an Authority Transfer event was held in Besmayah, transferring from the fifth contingent, composed mainly of personnel from the 53 Melilla Regulars Group, to the sixth contingent, generated by the 12th “Guadarrama” Brigade.
After sixth months of intensive work, the Melilla Regulars have been substituted by soldiers belonging mostly to the 31st “Asturias” Mechanised Infantry Regiment, with headquarters at the “El Goloso” base (Madrid).
The contingent is made up of around 365 soldiers, of which 246 come from the 12th “Guadarrama” Brigade, and the rest from different Army and Air Force units. A unit from the Civil Guard will also participate and will be in charge of delivering advanced police training to the Iraqi Security Forces.
Spain will be part of a multinational coalition of more than seventy countries which has been organised to defeat the so-called Islamic State (Daesh) within the Inherent Resolve Operation. In order to do this, our country will lead one of the four BPCs (Building Partner Capacity), a concept designed to increase the capabilities of the Iraqi Army with support from teams of instructors from other allied armies.
