EUMAM RCA II

A unit composed of 18 soldiers from Balearic Islands General Command travelled to the Central African Republic on 9 November.

It is the second contingent from Balearic Islands General Command to be sent to that African country, which has been in conflict for the last two years. The unit will relieve their colleagues of the first contingent, from the 47th Regiment “Palma”, which has been there since last May.

The soldiers will stay in the Central African Republic for six months as part of the EU Advisory Mission in the country. Their main task will be to protect, escort and support the team of military advisors the Spanish government has assigned to the mission.

The Central African Republic already was one of the poorest countries in Africa when it descended into chaos in 2013. Tensions focus on the Sahel region, where the Spanish soldiers will be working alongside units from nine other European countries.
