To help homeless people in this health emergency, staff from the Headquarters of the Operational Logistics Force moved a total of 39 bunks and many more blankets from the ‘Atocha’ barracks to the Municipal Sports Centre in Riazor, where a temporary shelter had been established by the A Coruña Council. For its part, the 41st Logistical Support Group from Zaragoza handed out 35 tonnes of food from the Aragonese capital’s food bank to various nursing homes in the province.

As further support to the health sector, the 3rd ‘Príncipe’ Regiment erected 14 tents in the car park of the Central University Hospital of Asturias, in Oviedo.

Furthermore, an officer nurse and staff with healthcare training from the ‘Gran Capitán’ Third, 1st of the Legion, assisted with the evaluation of the health of passengers disembarking in the port of Melilla, a task which comes under the ‘Balmis’ operation, which is fighting the expansion of coronavirus. In total, they carried out triage on around 70 people travelling by foot and 20 who were travelling in vehicles.

Disinfecting work

Thanks to its capabilities and the training of military personnel, the Army is offering broad support to the disinfection of facilities, most recently the Parque de Bomberos in Palma de Mallorca, where disinfection was carried out by the 1st ‘Valencia’ Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Regiment and the Sappers from the Balearic Islands General Command, and the continuous attention point in the Galician Health Service in Villagarcía de Arosa (Pontevedra), which was disinfected by the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical team from the Headquarters Battalion of the 7th ‘Galicia’ Brigade.

More patrols

Another task is the inspection and surveillance of sensitive points, actions which at the moment are being repeated across a number of different scenarios: from the busiest train stations in Madrid in which you can see members of the 12th ‘Guadarrama’ Brigade working with Law Enforcement every morning, to the security of critical points like the Endesa headquarters, the desalination plant or the fuel stores in the port of the autonomous city of Melilla, where members of the Melilla General Command have been sent.

As well as these tasks, the Army is also patrolling many areas across the whole of Spain, with the aim of supporting the population and contributing to the compliance with the restrictions on movement enforced by the State of Alarm. Yesterday, soldiers from the 6th ‘Almogáveres’ Brigade were seen for the first time in Gandía, Toledo, Azuqueca de Henares and Guadalajara; members of the 7th ‘Galicia’ Brigade were seen in the streets of Valladolid, Avilés and Santiago de Compostela; members of the 12th ‘Guadarrama’ Brigade were seen in Soria and in some areas to the north of Madrid; members of the 10th ‘Guzman el Bueno’ Brigade were seen in Jaén, Lucena and Linares; members of the 11th ‘Extremadura’ Brigade were seen in Zafra and Jerez de los Caballeros; members of the 16th ‘Canary Islands’ Brigade were seen in Telde, Galdar, Corralejo, Morrojable, Puerto del Rosario, Candelaria, Guimar and Los Cristianos; members of the Special Operations Command were seen in Elche; and members of the 71st Anti-aircraft Artillery Regiment were seen in Talavera de la Reina.
