Interview with Lieutenant General Rafael Comas Abad, Spanish HQ commander of NATO Rapid Deployment Force
Bétera will be the first HQ of NATO’s new response force
Lieutenant General Comas at High Readiness Force Land HQ
The NATO HQ in Bétera (Valencia) is getting ready for a new challenge: Leading the land component of Trident Juncture 2015 (#TJ15), the largest Allied exercise since the end of the Cold War, which Spain will host in the autumn. But before the launch of land operations, which will involve the deployment of over 20,000 soldiers, Bétera will have to face another significant test: During the first phase of the maneuvers, over the first half of October, a command post exercise will verify that it is ready to lead the land component of the NATO Response Force in 2016. These are the responsibilities confronting Lieutenant General Rafael Comas Abad (born in Figueres, Girona, in 1953), who is safe in the knowledge that the unit under his command, which has already proven itself up to the task in past NATO challenges, will do it again.
