Globalisation has rendered armed conflicts ever more complex, with the involvement of different cultures, urban warfare, new technologies, the information age… However, conflict resolution continues to be an eminently human activity.

Control of the future battlefield demands the development of human potential as a key resource. The Army must train leaders capable of working in any situation and of arriving at ethical solutions with a high degree of empathy in complex environments.

During conflict, the most vulnerable civilians are women, children and the elderly. The inclusion of a gender perspective is a significant asset when it comes to assisting that segment of the population.

All these issues will be dealt with during the 2nd Conference on ‘The Spanish Army and Future Challenges’, which will be held at the Army War School (25, Santa Cruz de Marcenado, Madrid) on 7 and 8 March from 18:00h to 20:15h.

Speakers will include Carlos Echevarría Jesús, professor of International Relations at the National University of Distance Education; José Antonio Guardiola Sanz, director of the TVE Programme “En Portada”; Juan Díez Nicolás, research Professor in Social Sciences and Security at the European University of Madrid. In addition to military experts such as Lieutenant General Javier Varela Salas, commander of the Land Force, and Lieutenant Colonel Jesús Gil Ruiz, former chief of the NATO International Military Staff Office of the Gender Advisor.

Admission is free but capacity is limited. Those interested should write to rrpp@et.mde.es before 29 February, indicating the date when they wish to attend as well as their full name and ID card number.

Please note that all lectures will be delivered in Spanish.
