The Spanish Army has received 40 “Dragón” 8×8 combat vehicles at a ceremony held on 16 January at the “Álvarez de Sotomayor” base, in Viator (Almería), presided over by the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, who was accompanied by the Chief of Staff of the Army (JEME), General of the Army Amador Enseñat.

During the handover, Robles highlighted that thanks to this programme “the interoperability of the Spanish Army is enhanced, as well as its reliability and credibility within the framework of NATO, EU and UN missions.” For his part, the JEME noted that thanks to this vehicle “that model of a modern, forward-looking army—balanced and sustainable—is further consolidated.”

In this regard, it should be noted that this programme was launched to modernise the capabilities of the Armed Forces and to meet the need to replace obsolete equipment.

The “Dragón” is a vehicle that meets General Staff requirements and is adapted to operate in the most demanding scenarios. As such, it has become an example of strategic autonomy and is set to represent a major transformation for the Spanish Army once it enters service, following the operational evaluation process in the field.
