The nearly twenty soldiers the Spanish Army has deployed in Afghanistan as part of the “Resolute Support” mission received the visit of acting minister of Defence, Pedro Morenés, on 14 January.

The minister first visited the soldiers stationed at the base in Kabul airport, who are part of the logistic support force. After having breakfast with them, he held a meeting with their commander, Colonel Sebastián Vega, who briefed him on the mission and the activities being carried out in the framework of the operation.

Morenés then travelled to the headquarters of the mission, where around ten Army soldiers are stationed. He met with them and with the second-in-command of the operation, British General Tim Radford.

Around twenty soldiers – two of them, from the Air Force – make up the current Spanish Army contribution to the mission to assist, train and advise the Afghan security forces and institutions. It is a smaller contribution than in the past; for fourteen years the mission in Afghanistan was the most important engagement of the Army, alongside the mission in Lebanon.
