II NATO Emerging Concepts Seminar
The II NATO Emerging Concepts Seminar was held at the “Jaime I” Military Base in Bétera (Valencia), where the HQ NRDC-ESP is located, on February 23, 24 and 25. In these sessions, the strategic environment and threats identified by NATO were analyzed and new concepts under development were presented. These new concepts would be applicable to the experimentation phase of “FUERZA 2035” (Force 2035) concept of the Spanish Army.
The seminar, organized by the HQ NRDC-ESP, collects the main doctrinal developments that are discussed in the different forums of the Alliance, in which the headquarters participates. The activity seeks to share and inform the Spanish Armed Forces about concepts such as: hybrid warfare, multi-domain operations, defense and deterrence in the Euro-Atlantic area, the informational environment assessment or cyber and electromagnetic activities, among others. The main theme was the Army Corps in High Intensity Operations, well known as Warfighting Corps (WFC) at the NATO environment.
This WFC concept was paramount for HQ NRDC-ESP because it is currently fully involved in its transition phase to NATO Warfighting Corps. Although its transition started at the 1st of January of this year, some personnel from HQ NRDC-ESP participated at the ARRC Headquarters exercise Loyal Leda 2020 (LOLE20) at the end of 2020.
NATO is in continuous and systematic transformation, mainly to the experiences and lessons contributed by its allied members, to ensure that it has the capabilities, policies and structures required in the changing international security environment and to pre-empt future challenges. As part of the NATO force structure, the HQ NRDC-ESP provides first-hand and shares doctrinal developments, to adapt to new challenges in a dynamic and changing environment, being therefore, permanently updated on new conceptual developments in the environment of the Atlantic Alliance.
The Spanish commitment to NATO will begin on January 1, 2022, when HQ NRDC-ESP will assume the role of NATO Warfighting Corps for one year. Previously, it must be certified through a Combat Readiness Evaluation (CREVAL) within the framework of exercise Steadfast Leda 21 that will take place at the end of this year 2021.
