The Multinational Brigade Task Force Slovakia is transferred under the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Spain Headquarters
Spain took command of NATO Multinational Brigade Task Force in Lest (Slovakia) on 1 July 2024. Troops from Czechia, Portugal, Slovakia and Slovenia are deployed alongside the 800 Spanish troops as part of the task force.
The NATO Multinational Brigade Task Force in Lešt (Slovakia), led by Spain on the basis of the “Almogávares VI” Paratroopers Brigade, is transferred to NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Spain Headquarters (HQ NRDC-ESP) as of September 15. This transfer is being carried out based on the agreements established at the NATO Summit held in Madrid in 2022.
This new command and control structure allows for a more agile integration of capabilities provided by allied nations, thereby optimising an allied operational response to potential contingencies in the area of operations.
The task force, one of eight stationed along NATO's eastern borders, has showcased its ability to quickly form a multinational combat brigade in a short period. Since the deployment of the Spanish contingent earlier this year, it has been a key element in bolstering the security and readiness of the region.
On July 1, 2024, Spain officially assumed the leadership of the NATO Multinational Brigade Task Force deployed in Slovakia, taking over from Czechia. Moreover, since March this year, the HQ NRDC-ESP has deployed a Corps Forward Element (CFE) in Kuchyña (Slovakia), with the main task of coordinating NATO's deterrence and defense plans on the eastern flank and ensuring effective coordination with host nations and other military entities.
This deployment reflects the strong commitment of Spain and its Armed Forces to the Allies on NATO's eastern flank.
