The JEME at the General Military Archive of Segovia
The Chief of Staff of the Army (JEME), Army General Amador Enseñat y Berea, presided over the central event of the 125th Anniversary of the creation of the General Military Archive of Segovia (AMGS), held on June 14th, in the Hall of Kings of the Alcázar of Segovia.
In the course of the same, the director of the Archive, Lieutenant Colonel Herranz, received the distinctions and diplomas awarded by the Royal Military Order of San Fernando, the Royal Academy of History, the Academy of Military Sciences and Arts, the Academy of History and Art of San Quirce and the Spanish Association of Military History, which reward the centennial trajectory of the General Military Archive of Segovia. In his speech, the Lieutenant Colonel wanted to highlight the Alcázar, for guarding inside it for 125 years a military archive that treasures a multitude of documents, which are almost inexhaustible for researchers of the history of Spain and its Armies. He also highlighted the main mission of the archives as guarantors of legality as true custodians of collective identity: "Historical archives bear witness to the development of peoples, guarding their documents for centuries."
After the emotional awarding of decorations to civilian and military personnel, who for various reasons deserved them, a visit took place to the exhibition "The military footprint in the Segovian archives," in which the work carried out by the Segovian Archives Group -made up of 14 institutions- with the presentation of documents covering the 12th to 20th centuries was presented.
After the military act, the JEME accompanied by the director of the Archive signed the Book of Honor of the Unit.
General Military Archive of Segovia
The Segovian Military Archive is the oldest of the Armed Forces, created by Queen Regent Doña María Cristina, by Royal Decree of June 22nd, 1898, and located in the Alcázar of the city.
At present, the AGMS funds represent more than 83,000 files spread over 16,000 meters of shelves. Since 1998, the Centre has received transfers of personal documents produced by the General Directorate of Personnel, through the Intermediate Archive of the Army Headquarters, and judicial documents deposited in the Intermediate Archives of the Archival System of the Army. Records must be more than 20 years old to be admitted to this Archive. In the case of personal files, the period of 20 years of service is understood as from the closure of the service record for retirement, death or dismissal from the Army.
Access to these personal files is free and can be done through the form on their website, as well as consulting the various documentation catalogues.
The AGMS is in possession of the Gold Medal of the City of Segovia and the Medal of the Patronage of the Alcázar, awarded on the occasion of the celebration of the first centenary of its creation.
