FLAGS

Marta: This is the Spanish flag, isn't it?

David: Yes, its colours are red and yellow (or gold: “gualda”: that's why the Spanish flag is also called la rojigualda). But it is not the same as the flag we usually see.

Marta: It looks old and has some words written on it.

David: It says here that it is the flag of an Army Infantry regiment, which used it from 1844 on. This flag is over 175 years old.

Marta: So, has the Spanish flag always been like this?

David: Before the red and yellow flag, every historical Spanish kingdom, like Castile and Aragon, had its own flag. Later, the flag had different colours, like white or red, and also different coats of arms, depending on who the head of state was.
