First Spike shot from the new Tiger
Wednesday, December 23, 2015
Number: 4789
The Tigers of the 1st Attack Helicopter Battalion, based in Almagro (Ciudad Real), have shown their ability to operate with the Spike weapons system in their first shooting exercise, which was carried out at the training centre “San Gregorio”, in Zaragoza, on 18 December.
Systems integration in the aircraft is complete, making it possible to shoot with no restrictions, both in movement and stationary, at day and at night.
The missile attached to the helicopter is the extended version, also known as long range, which has a range of 8 kilometres. It is equipped with a terminal guidance system which gives it great precision until just before impact, hence significantly reducing the likelihood of collateral damage.
Adding this fourth-generation missile to the Support and Escort version of the Tiger helicopter greatly increases the combat capabilities of the Army in any hostile setting.
The Tiger thus becomes more powerful, dissuasive and safe, and therefore a more effective tool for combat.
