Astorga: A school for future artillery staff sergeants

Friday, June 5, 2015

Number: 4296

Future artillery staff sergeants who will receive their diploma this summer joined the Field Artillery Group GALCA I/62 at Astorga (León) the last week of May to complete their training.

The 48 students have thus been able to gain in-depth knowledge of GALCA’s current materiel, the Field Artillery Integrated System, which is being used by many artillery units of the Army. Once at the “Santocildes” cantonment, the students joined in the training, drilling and maintenance tasks of the unit. Their activities included a stay at the “El Teleno” exercise area, where they carried out several exercises with the members of the Group: manoeuvres; life in the field, both during the day and at night; and live artillery fire.

The trainee staff sergeants were able to operate the Talos system and other equipment used by GALCA’s Forward Air Controllers, who last year took part in the mission to Afghanistan during the deployment of the “Tiger” helicopters.

This unit collaborates closely with the Artillery Academy in the practical training of future officers and NCOs, as well as the update training of the academy’s teaching staff to refresh their knowledge on the most modern materiel and procedures of field artillery.
