Special Operations Command creates new group

Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Number: 4820

Since 15 January, Special Operations Command (known as MOE) includes a new Special Operations Group (GOE, in its Spanish acronym): the 2nd GOE “Granada”. This brings to four the number of groups under its command.

The foundation ceremony took part at the garrison “Alférez Rojas Navarrete” in Alicante and was presided over by MOE commander, General Demetrio Muñoz. The ceremony symbolised the implementation of Resolution 01/2015 of 28 May 2015, whereby the Chief of the Army Staff ordered the formation of this new unit.

The creation of this unit means that there is a GEO for each of the four phases of the availability cycle: general training, specific training, deployment, and recovery. This now coincides with the number of groups: the 3rd GOE “Valencia”, the 4th GOE “Tercio de Ampurdán”, the 19th GOE “Caballero Legionario Maderal Oleaga” and the new 2nd GOE “Granada”.

The “green berets” currently contribute personnel to several of the foreign missions the Spanish Armed Forces are involved in.
