Army General Francisco Javier Varela Farewell From HQ NRDC-ESP
May, 2017
Army General Francisco Javier Varela has relinquished command of NATO's HQ NRDC-ESP Bétera (Valencia), following a ceremony held at the Headquarters on Friday, 28 April. General Varela took over the position as Chief of Staff of the Spanish Army on Monday, 3 April, succeeding General Domínguez Buj.
During the farewell ceremony, General Varela addressed those in attendance, noting that the enhanced NATO Response Force 2016 LCC commitment was “our most important and demanding misión”. He also stated that through this commitment, this Headquarters “gained great reputation up to the highest strategic military and political levels, resulting in unusaul briefings to the NATO Military Committee and to the North Atlantic Council”.
General Varela thanked all component Headquarters for their loyalty, dedication and service and also extended his gratitude to the CIS Command and the rest of the Valencia Region units and garrisons.
The parade concluded with the Honours Company marching past.
