Annual CBRN Collaboration Between the Spanish Army and UME

The Spanish Army and the Military Emergency Unit (UME) held training sessions from March 24th to 28th at the “Daoíz y Velarde” Barracks (Valencia) on early identification processes for CBRN—Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear—agents. These sessions took place within the framework of the protocol governing preparation, training, and support activities between both units.

During the sessions, the Rapid Identification Laboratory (LABIR), part of the Military Emergency Unit’s Technological and Environmental Emergency Response Group, and the Deployable Chemical and Biological Laboratories of the CBRN Defense Regiment “Valencia” No. 1 carried out confirmed identification procedures for chemical and biological agents.

The early identification of CBRN agents by these types of laboratories, which can be deployed to the incident area, along with proper advisory support to the Command, is considered essential for decision-making and the implementation of preventive, protective, and recovery countermeasures —both in operational areas and in cases of emergencies, crises, or disasters within national territory.

The annual collaboration between the Spanish Army and the Military Emergency Unit (UME) has been ongoing since 2023, yielding excellent results for both units. It has facilitated the acquisition of valuable lessons learned and contributed to the continuous improvement of these unique Armed Forces capabilities.
